"You reel me out, then you cut the string"

Introducing my most recent finish: Fifteen Step!

I'm really enamored with this one, just absolutely chuffed. The pattern is "Two Step" by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company. I adore her patterns. I found this pattern, along with another of hers, a year or so ago at an estate sale. (more on that other pattern later) Her designs are classic, gorgeous, and deceptively simple. Precision, care, and attention are rewarded with a final product like this quilt. I can't get enough of sawtooth stars, and it seems like neither can Mrs.Nelson.

The top of the quilt is composed entirely of woven cottons from a few different producers of fine quilting cottons. Wildflower Wovens from Art Gallery Fabrics, Warp and Weft Ooh Lucky Lucky from Ruby Star Society, Space Dye Wovens from Figo Studio, and some scraps from here and there and everywhere. It's such a joy to work with this kind of fabric. The colors and textures are incredibly rich. They all behave a little differently and it's fun to get to know them while I work with them!

My rotary cutter quivers in anticipation

The creator of the pattern has her own story behind the name 'Two Step'. I chose to title this quilt 'Fifteen Step' as a bit of a riff, and because I'm a little bit of a Radiohead nerd. The color palette does seem to me like it would fit in well with Stanley Donwood's art that he's made for the band, particularly In Rainbows. It felt fitting to me, anyway.

A peek behind the curtain

The backing is pieced together with some scraps from the front, lovely grey floral yardage I've been holding onto for just the right piece, a gifted goldenrod bedsheet, and a thrifted blue bedsheet. The batting is a cotton/wool blend, which makes the quilt light yet warm, and has a wonderful drape. I quilted with the walking foot in half-inch straight lines. Despite the density of the quilting, that drape is really dreamy. When you wrap yourself in this quilt, it hugs and hangs and holds your body heat like a welcome hug.

Peep the binding: also woven cotton!

The flying geese, the sawtooth stars, the luscious fabrics, and the rainbow of threads I chose to use for the straight-line quilting, all add up to a quilt I'm really proud of and frankly in love with. I'm happy to share it and I'm glad it exists! :)
