Finches in Flight

Spring is nearly here. Real spring; sometime following fool's spring and the spring of deception. It is a good time to have finished up this latest project. Another pattern called 'Due South' by Carrie Nelson. I made some changes to the pattern, and went with a color scheme rather than basing my fabric selections on tone. It's near enough to her pattern that credit is certainly still due.

Someday when the ground is dry I'll see about getting better photos of the entire quilt. I'm standing on a ladder in this photo and don't quite have the wingspan (pun intended) to hold it out completely. There's a sweet little sawtooth star in the top corner that's hidden in this image.

I'm very pleased with all the components of this quilt, and the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. All cotton fabrics, sourced from far and wide. New stock, destashes, garage sales, so on. The batting is wonderful- 100% cotton with no scrim, very drapey and soft. The backing, which I have yet to photo, is an off-white, gold-speckled wide back fabric. I usually use vintage sheets or pieced-together scrappy backing, but I couldn't be bothered this go around. I shelled out for a wide-back fabric and I'm glad I did.

This is I think only the second quilt I've made that have the blocks 'on point'. Assembling, sewing, and quilting on the diagonal really twisted my brain around. The result is worthwhile, I think. I put a good bit of thought into the quilting threads, as always, probably more than necessary. Once I have my mind made up about a 'system' for the quilting, I have to follow through just to satisfy myself. Nobody else really needs to notice.

More photos to come, someday. For now, here are my finches in flight, harbingers of spring and a return to blue skies. Amen!
